Goals based wealth management (GBWM) offers a focused, consistent approach that can help uncover a deeper understanding of our client’s goals and priorities, and develop strategies tailored to best achieve each goal. Using this consultative approach, by contrast, our client can take into account unique specifications of the financial dimensions of his or her goals and risk attitude with respect to each goal.
Furthermore, GBWM can be used to manage a client’s personal balance sheet and cash flows to achieve goals that span multiple time horizons and life stages. Since each client goal can have a distinct personal meaning and importance, it is logical that associated risk attitudes vary across goals. Unlike traditional asset allocation, in which accounts and products are managed independently of human capital (earning potential), financial assets and goals, GBWM considers all assets, liabilities and goals together. Consequently, with GBWM, portfolio construction strategies can be customized to each client’s personal needs and preferences. Jay is a specially qualified Senior Portfolio Manager who, in addition to providing traditional advice and guidance, can help clients pursue their objectives by building and managing his own personalized or defined strategies, which may incorporate individual stocks and bonds, options, and third-party investment strategies. After meeting certain additional requirements, a Senior Portfolio Manager may use his own strategies to manage the assets of other Merrill Advisors’ clients. Jay began his career in the financial industry with Prudential Securities in 1983 as a technologist. Over the next 10 years Jay worked at JP Morgan & First Boston where he was instrumental in the development of state of the art, computerized portfolio trading systems. In 1992, he joined the Lehman Brothers Investment Banking Division of Shearson Lehman Brothers as a Financial Consultant to offer clients a wide range of financial services. Jay finished first in his training class of 160. In 1994, he was certified as a Portfolio Manager with the Smith Barney's Portfolio Management Group. In June 2008, Jay earned the designation of Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor™ from the College for Financial Planning Institutes Corp. In October of 2016, Jay earned the prestigious designation of Certified Private Wealth Advisor® from Investments & Wealth Institute™.
