Paul is celebrating more than three decades spent serving a loyal and growing circle of ambitious clients and generations of their families. The referrals he continues to receive are a reflection of what Paul believes is a distinctive and personalized approach to optimizing clients’ wealth.
Having managed clients’ money and emotion amid the volatility of 1987, 2000, 2008 and 2020 (with the scars to prove it), Paul is proud that virtually all of those clients remain with him today. He believes that’s due in large part to his focus on mitigating investment risk through a top-down approach that emphasizes diversification across asset classes and sectors.
Throughout his career, Paul has pursued rigorous training and acquired a rare combination of industry credentials. This background informs his guidance today – allowing him to bring an uncommon level of acumen and insight to high-net-worth individuals in Washington D.C. and 15 states. They include successful entrepreneurs and business owners (many who are government contractors), as well as foundations and other non-profit organizations.
For clients looking for an exit strategy through the sale of their company, Paul helps prepare and position them for optimal results – with an eye on tax consequences, retirement and legacy planning. Many other clients can benefit from Paul’s rich experience in specialty asset management and benefit from customized lending through Bank of America, N.A. for investment and commercial real estate, timberland, farm and ranch land, as well as residential and securities-based lending.
Whether he works with clients whose financial needs are rather straightforward or require thoughtfully integrated strategies, Paul’s planning-based approach is ongoing, rather than a one-time event. From frequent conversations with clients (and both spouses, whenever possible), he can help clients identify their most cherished goals and greatest concerns. By doing his job well, Paul finds that clients can focus on their careers, families and serving the greater good.
Paul launched his career in 1979 with a Washington D.C. financial advisory firm before joining Advest, Inc. in 1994. He joined Merrill Lynch as a Senior Vice President, when it acquired Advest in 2005. Paul earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland. He holds the:
• CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc.
• Certified Investment Manager Analyst® (CIMA®) designation sponsored by the Investments & Wealth Institute™ at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
• Certified Private Wealth Advisor® (CPWA®) designation sponsored by the Investments & Wealth Institute™ at the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago.
Paul is also a Portfolio Manager who can help clients pursue their objectives by managing on a discretionary basis her own personalized or defined strategies, which may incorporate individual stocks and bonds, Merrill model portfolios, and third-party investment strategies.
Paul is a former Chairman of the Board of the National Capital Chapter of the Financial Planning Association (FPA). He supports several non-profit organizations in his community and Becky’s Fund, where he is a board member. Paul has three adult children, enjoys a good game of golf and resides in Herndon, Virginia.
I follow the deep-seated Merrill tradition of participating in the communities we serve. This drives my interest in spending time volunteering with organizations in our community.
Communication is instrumental to managing life's challenges. That's why I work to engage you and your family in the financial decision-making process. Communicating openly with family members on the sometimes-difficult subject of wealth can be a challenge. I can help facilitate these discussions and offer personalized financial strategies designed to educate the younger generation about how assets may be invested.
